ICD-10-CM updates

We have been used to getting yearly updates once per year in October 1st every year

Covid Pandemic changed things

In the middle of the year, the COVID dx code set was introduced, and now we have a mid year update.

April 1st updates

42 new diagnostic codes added to the ICD-10-CM

Categories of new codes

  • S00-T88
    • Financial abuse
      • New codes- 12 codes
  • V00-Y99
    • Maltreatment and neglect
      • Expanded codes- 15 new and expanded codes
  • Z00-Z99
    • Health literacy
      • New code- 1 brand new code
    • Physical environment
      • New codes- 2 new codes
    • Inadequate housing
      • Expanded code section- 4 new and expanded codes
    • Patient non compliance
      • New codes- 4 new codes

Deleted codes

Starting April 1st, 2023, the following will be deleted from the ICD-10-CM

The codes regarding maltreatment and neglect perpetrated by a husband, wife, male, or female partner. There are newly added codes to replace these

Inadequate housing codes replaced with the expanded codes in chapter 21, these codes further specify the issues with housing like environmental Temps or inadequate housing utilities

The last 2 codes deleted are patient non-compliace with meds or renal dialysis. The expanded codes in chapter 21 will replace these noncompliance codes. There is a brand new code to further specify noncompliance(due to financial hardships)

Revised code

CMS is revising and updating the definition for hardship to include “due to limited financial resources, not elsewhere classified”

This will help to encompass situations in which a patient csn not obtain clothing, utilities, basic needs, as well as childcare due to financial hardship
